It's difficult to recommend since you say 'dead or alive' then you say 'new musicians' to listen to so for me i will just list some of my favourite living singers, not in any particular order though my number one is still FERRE GOLA.

Malage De Lugendo
General Defao
Doudou Copa
Papa Wemba
Koffi Olomide
Doudou Copa
JB Mpiana
Meje30
Aimelia Lias
Alain Mpela
Bourro Mpela
Sam Tshintu
Manda Chante
Reddy Amisi
Babia Ndonga

These indicated above are solo artists ,there are some other good lead singers in other bands such as Merlin Bouton and Miel De Son from Wenge Maison Mére,Chikito,Guy Digital and others from Ferre Gola's band. There is also Abram Mignon,Atshuda Ngenge,Nono Fuji,Erick Menthe and Abram Des Charmes from Wenge BCBG plus many more like Fally Ipupa,Junior Kingombe,Jypson Butukondolo, etc who are former Quartier Latin singers, they are all good singers i respect.

This is task that does not make sense since Congolese music is built on vocalists and intricate guitar work. But any list should by those mentioned should include Nyboma, Sam Mangwana, Dindo Yogo, King Kester Emeneya, Mopao, Suzuki, Evoloko, Boziana, you name it. For me, out of respect for their productivity and charisma and musicianish I would include Franco and Werrason (yes I would include him). Now you could looking for the young ones good luck. I also like Ferre Gola's singing but he is not at the top. He loses a grade because he kind does not understand the structure of Congolese music from a class 70s or 80s point of view. Congolese music has never been dominated only by vocals only, it is the message to accompany the sweet guitar that is the magic (that captured our souls and to rush to the floor). Compare to Defao, Pepe Kalle or even Zaiko LL - there is no complications in music as to the vocal part, it is like an accompaniment. The solo guitar too was intertwined as a chorus, that is why today's music while some of us enjoy it is way different from the past.

This is where i think you've got it all mixed up,Ferre,Sam Tshintu and Serge Mabiala are probably the only musicians from this generation who sample music from the past, watch Ferre's concert 'LIPANDA' and you'll will probably change your position.

Well yes right now. Heritier still manages to have a good voice when he does records. but live performances Chickito is way better. Soon Chickito will rule the Congolese Music Scene and he will be better than everyone else I mentioned in the current age.

;D I know you are laughing while tyiping this........but these three did well in the days of Y' Ya Pas Match, TH, and Internet, today, their voices have been ''scratched'' by booz.

For me, some top vocalists dead or alive:

Papa Wembadio
Malage Delungendo
Le General Defao (shocked some of you left him out)
JB Mpiana Salvatora
Pepe Kalle (king of voice)
Yondo Sister (Laugh at me but this lady has a voice)
Tshala Mwana
Adjani. WMM, too bad his voice is gone
Afande
Aimelia Lias (if you want a voice for your tears, listen to this guy)
Montana Kamenga
Ferre Gola (although sebenless)
Fally
Serge Mabiala
.............I can go on and on

I said I like Ferre's singing but I would not consider him a classical Congolese singer in the traditional song structure as we know it. His sebene influence comes from Coupe Decale school or pop-ish. He may sample older music but for me give me a Defao or Pepe Kalle, they will drive you to the sebene right there. Have you listened to the classical Wenge Musica, Zaiko LL, Lipua Lipua, and etc. I mean straight up. Sometimes we are comparing emotions from very different generations. During my youth, my God, we would dance to cranking sebene and focussed vocals (not much talking to distract the sebene).

Rhumba lovers, why is nobody mentioning one of the very best, Daniel Zittani Ntesa...Dalienst. Add his cousin Kiesse Diambu.

For those who claim Simaro sings/sang, post the song(s). I know a few songs where he throws a few words here and there but that's all: he has a hoarse voice.
