Sonima. That was some years ago when digital download was a new thing and vendors were first trying it out. I did listen to and then DELETE the files that I did not pay for. Seemed to be the right thing to do, sample but not steal. A lot of Antillean music I listened to was misnamed, sometimes even mis-allocated to the correct artist. It was pretty confusing.

It was chaotic, just like the shop they had in Brussels, the one they took over from Musicanova.

About the shop Musicanova, I heard stories about how they were the number one international shop for Congolese Music. Sometimes I wish I was born back in the 70's to encounter the excitement of going into the stores, buying racks and racks of LPs instead of online shopping; it can be expensive man.

The good thing about music is when you hear it you feel no pain So hit me with the music!

When I first entered the store I could not believe my eyes, records I had read about but never had been able to find, records and artists I had never heard of. I did buy a lot of albums the first time and went back two months later to buy more. Behind the counter many pictures were posted on the wall of all the artists who had visited the shop (they all came there when they were in Brussels). I only saw two when I was in shop, Franco and Zaiko singer J P Mbuse. An other musician who I saw in the shop every now and then was Sax Matalanza whose wife had a small restaurant opposite the shop (there my brother and I met Josky who was having a meal). The owner of Musicanova was an Italian guy named Pierro and he was helped in the shop by his two sisters and a guy from Chad. Most of the music which was sold was from Congo but he also had a large stock of Cuban music, Makossa and Zouk. He told me that he got orders from many countries, one day he showed me a letter from someone in Zimbabwe, this was before the internet so the name of the shop was well known. Pierro also released some records on the Musicanova label. Unfortunately he sold the shop some years ago and then it became chaos.

I also miss that shop a lot! Pierro sold the shop to Sonima when business was going down, people were buying less CDs and at a certain time the gallery where the shop was situated became the meeting place for some youth gangs, when you entered you were immediately approached to buy drugs, violent incidents happened, police razzias ... so a lot of people were evading that place. Sonima couldn't save the place, as Ronald said the shop became chaotic, it was empty most of the time, most Congolese people went to Hermène Kaba or other small shops to buy there CDs, they also had problems with the taxman (the owner always insisted that you payed cash, often at a lower price) and eventually the shop was closed. Much of the remaining stock of CDs and DVDs was/is sold by Hermène Kaba (Matongue Musique) at 1 euro/CD or DVD...
